hot shoe

A hot shoe is a camera accessory that typically mounts on top of an SLR or dSLR camera body that accepts a battery-powered flash. Some hot shoes are set to one side of a camera, especially with a rangefinder camera.

The hot shoe’s connector pins provide communication to the camera, making adjustments to exposure and flash distance when set in specific modes.

The following video demonstrates a flash unit being mounted on top of a dSLR camera’s hot shoe.
